Okay, so I am not on TikTok and I am not planning to get on it. I know, I’ll end up scrolling on TikTok all day! I barely can even keep up with Instagram and this blog. Somehow, I did come across this “TikTok Viral Recipe: Custard Yogurt Toast” and wanted to give it a try since I have all the ingredients on hand!
The first time I made this, I followed the recipe from Cooking with Ayeh. After making it a few times, I have modified this to my tasting:
Ingredients
- 4-5 slices of bread (I used the Artesano Brioche Bread but any soft bread will do) *
- 1 egg
- 1/2 cup of plain Greek yogurt
- 2 teaspoon of maple syrup **
- 1 teaspoon of honey **
- 1/2 teaspoon of lemon juice
- Optional: Toppings of your choice – I used blueberries and chocolate chips
- Optional: Powdered sugar (1 tbs)
* The Artesano brioche bread is on the sweeter side, so if you don’t like things too sweet – I would suggest white or wheat bread
** The recipe from Cooking with Ayeh recommends 2-3 teaspoon of maple syrup or honey. I have tried both, and I like the mixture of two of them together instead of one or the other.
Instructions:
- Preheat toaster or oven to 350°F (if you have an airfryer, please check Cooking with Ayeh’s recipe as she has details on that)
- In a bowl, add the egg, yogurt, maple syrup, honey, and lemon juice together. Whisk together to form a liquid custard
- Using your fingers or the back of a spoon, press into the center of the bread to indent and create a well without cutting through
- Spoon in the custard mixture into the indented well and add your toppings on top. You can mix your toppings together or separate into each toast
- You can either place toasts on an oven tray with baking paper or I like to use a rack so that the bread gets toasted evenly on both sides.
- Bake for 12-15 minutes (depending on your oven/toaster strength). Keep an eye on it!
- The custard should be set and the crust is golden and crispy.
- Top it with some powdered sugar or drizzle of honey/maple syrup if you like or both!
PRO TIP: pour the powdered sugar in a strainer and lightly tap the strainer over the toasts for a light and even amount. - Enjoy! Please let me know in the comments down below or tag me on Instagram (@peacockplace_) if you tried my version.
Our final thoughts on it:
I love how straight forward it is to make and you might already have all the ingredients on hand. Just like pancakes/waffles – it’s a little too heavy for us and we definitely won’t have it everyday. Not judging if you are though! I would keep this in the breakfast/dessert rotation and have it once in a while. Have you tried this yet?
