Hello World!
It’s been months since I’ve logged in and written something. One was in drafts back in May. I couldn’t sleep that night for some reason and in the middle of just typing out a random thought, and suddenly there was a minor earthquake. What an odd timing that I woke up about 10 minutes before an earthquake!
Last I wrote in here was April favorites! I didn’t have any May favorites. And something “blessing in disguise” happened in June which I’ll touch base on later.
In May, P and I (99.9% P) did a lot of work on the kitchen… and guess what? It’s finally almost done. I know I’ve been saying it, but it truly is. All the cabinets and fronts are installed. I’ve ordered the countertops and just got a call this morning saying that it is ready to be installed next week! My first estimated time was 6-8 weeks and that was just roughly 3 weeks ago! Yay for no delays… especially with all the global supplies/delay issue we have been facing.
Next few things that need to be done: I have to finish the drywall around the doors and ceiling, paint, get quotes on floors and backsplash. After that is done, the main part of the house is “complete”. We will still have to re-do the upstairs bathroom at some point, but that’s mostly a next year’s project. Crazy part? When we first moved in the house, the bathroom was the most updated/modernized part of the house and now it’s the most outdated. Crazy how it comes back full circle and I’m here for it 😊
Another update is that I have a new job! I think it’s considered as a new job? I have pivoted my career and I’m in a completely different role, but within the same company.
Back in early June, the company did a re-org and we had to close down two labs (I’m in the science field). One of the labs was mine. Fortunately, I didn’t get let go. I was devastated and scared especially with us just buying a house and in the middle of major renovations. They gave us time to figure things out and if we would want to join another department. There wasn’t a specific time limit, so my biggest fear was that I could technically be let go tomorrow. My whole career life has been in this specific department, and I didn’t even think about joining another department, especially what I do is very niche. Like.. how do once convince a group “Hey! Please let me join your team even though I have zero experience in that.” With that being said, I started applying elsewhere even landed a few offers. All of the jobs I applied elsewhere were jobs that I’m currently doing.
In the meantime, I’ve been blessed because 4 other departments at my company did reach out and asked if I would like to join their department. Out of the 4, 2 were intriguing. And it was intriguing, because they were both outside the lab bench life. Also, this re-org and having to suddenly look for a new job has been eye-opening to me. It was then that I really realize that what I do is niche, because every company only needs 1 (maybe a handful if it’s a big company like Johnson & Johnson). So even when I was looking for jobs, only a handful came up.
Let me rewind back some time. Some time in 2021, I knew I wanted to pivot my career.
1 – I no longer enjoy doing bench/science work. I work specifically in a Vivarium. I had to think long term, and this job isn’t something I see myself doing until retirement
2 – P and I have decided that we will be moving outside of CA eventually. Most likely right after we finish renovating the house. We are both leaning towards his home-town which is Georgia and there was ZERO job available for me. We could move to the closest spot that would have more jobs, and that’s North Carolina. The thing is, if we were to move – why move that far away from BOTH side? My family is in CA 😊
Long story, short – I pivoted my career and am in a whole different department. I am no longer doing benchwork! Yay. I am very happy about that. So when I mentioned this was a blessing in disguise – this is what I meant!
Now that I know this role better, I am so excited. I’ve actually have some minor experience with it in my past. I know I’ll thrive and truly enjoy this new position. Best part, I won’t have to worry as much when P and I decide to move across country about finding a job.
This is all I have for today. Next blog post should be about the Northern California Road trip that P and I took back on July 4th week. Stay tune for that! Subscribe and be the first to know when that is out. Thank you for joining me.
I hope you know that whatever you are going through, there is a light at the end of the tunnel. I know it’s hard to believe so but trust me on that. All you have to do is put one foot in front of the other. You might not be where you wanted to be, but you’re where you are meant to be.
